I see intention in every pearl.
I see care in every tiny rose she glued with shaking hands.
I see love in every detail.
It is a piece of her heart.
And yet a handful of careless words almost crushed that heart.
This is the part adults often forget:
children believe the first voices loud enough to respond.
They don’t have armor yet.
They don’t know that other people’s opinions are not facts.
They don’t know that some of the world’s greatest artists were once ignored, doubted, mocked, misunderstood.
So last night I told her exactly that.
I told her that real artists are not always understood.
I told her that beauty isn’t meant to please every eye — it only needs to be honest.
I told her that some of the most breathtaking things in this world exist because somebody had the courage to create something different.
And now… I’m asking for something from you.
If you have even a moment — could you tell her her swan is beautiful?
She keeps sneaking over to my shoulder, hoping someone out there — someone real — sees what she created.
She isn’t asking for perfection.
She is asking to be seen.
And if a few kind words today can keep a child from giving up something that brings her joy, peace, and confidence… then maybe those words are worth more than we realize.
Because sometimes the difference between a child who continues creating — and a child who stops forever — is not talent…
… it’s whether the world says “that’s beautiful,” or “that’s stupid.”
So — to anyone who reads this:
Her swan is beautiful. She is beautiful. Her art matters.
And so does your kindness.
Emma, thank-you for sharing your beautiful swan. I’ll bet it took you a long time. How did you know where to put the roses and the pearls. I’m an old man and never been able to make a swan so pretty. Those kids said mean things because there were jealous you could make the swan and they couldn’t. The next time kids say mean things, you should feel good because you have a one of a kind and you are a one of a kind. Just say “thank-you Jesus” for being one of a kind. Remember, everything you do is special for you and your Mom. I love you, dave
